Half Broken Things
A very disturbing story that you can’t stop reading because the writing is so incredibly good. At times, it seems impossible that people could think the way or do the things they characters do. But then I’d recall the sociopaths I’ve encountered and realize that the personalities in this book are shockingly realistic .

Down River
After reading this book, I can say without a doubt that it fully deserved the Edgar Award it received. Brilliantly written story about the damage families can do

Paranoia
A low level tech employee diverts funds to throw a party for the loading crew. Instead of firing him and having him arrest, the management forces him to spying at another tech corporation. Breathtaking suspense with a very nice twist.

I, Elizabeth
I’ve read a lot of history books and historical novels about Elizabeth I but this was the first one written in first person and it was a thoroughly fun experience. It felt authentic throughout and evoked time and place impeccably.

Paris 1919:Six Months that Changed the World
A fascinating account of the creation of the peace treaty after World War One. Those six months foreshadowed many events in the rest of the last century and still impact our world today.

The Black Tower
I met Louis Bayard at the Virginia Festival of the Book. When he said he wrote a novel featuring legendary detective Vidocq, I was intrigued. And I was right to be. Terrific story about the pioneer in detection and the ill-fated son of King Louis XVI of France.

A Walk in the Woods
An old friend from elementary school recommended this book and he was so right. Filled with nature, history and craziness as two men who are old enough to know better tackle the Appalachian Trail.

The Women
Another exquisitely written book by T. C. Boyle. This one tells the tale of the women in architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s life. The point of view is a student from Japan who presents his impression and knowledge of the women but leaves the tragedy of Mamah Borthwick Cheney until the end when the student learns of her fate. The ending tore out my heart.

Loving Frank
I spotted this book shortly after reading The Women by T. C. Boyle. This book told the full story of Mamah, the one true love of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Her life ended in a tragic, horrific act of violence.

Rain Gods
James Lee Burke touches me as few other writers can. He evokes beauty and horror in the same paragraph. This is a new book in the Hackberry Holland series and I loved every page.

The Poacher’s Son
Incredible debut novel from Paul Doiron featuring Maine Game Warden Mike Bowditch battling the past as he deals with the present. Definitely an author to add to your reading list.

9 Dragons
Harry Bosch goes international after the murder of a friend and the abduction of his daughter. One of the best novels in the series.

The Liar’s Lullaby
Country Singer Tasia McFarland is a disaster waiting to happen—and oh boy, does she. I really enjoyed reading a thriller with a forensic psychiatrist as the main protagonist.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
A charming and moving story. It made me laugh, made me cry, made me sigh. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

The Killing Storm
I really enjoy Texas Ranger Sarah Armstrong and this third book in the series is the best of all. Catching a killer and rescuing a victim is complicated by a hurricane.

Brass Verdict
I liked Mickey Haller in THE LINCOLN LAWYER but like him even better in this book because he interacts with one of my favorite protagonists of all, Harry Bosch.

The Red Queen
A brilliant follow-up to THE WHITE QUEEN. Captured the setting brilliantly. Can’t wait for the next book in this series.

The Mark
Poor Henry Parker! Just as he thinks all his dreams are coming true, his whole life is ripped to shreds. He tries to escape the hoards who are chasing him. Fun read. Incredible Suspense. Jason Pinter’s first is a terrific thriller. Want more Henry Parker books!
